How to make a baby sleep peacefully
A baby's sleep is determined by many factors and thus some skill is needed in handling the baby or newborn. A peaceful sleep ensures the delicate newborn transforms into some bouncing baby and later on a clumsy and curious toddler. At this tender age, sleep ensures that the brain of the baby develops well. Medical records have shown that babies who experience poor sleep patterns in their early stages of life mostly have underdeveloped brains.
First, it is important to learn how to hold the baby or the newborn for that matter at the right position. It is a fact that a baby won’t stay asleep unless held at the right position which is most comfortable to it.You need to first ensure that the baby’s head is resting on your chest and then you slide your hand up.Then while still supporting its neck, move your baby’s head to the crook of your arm from her bottom to support her neck. Then gently rock the baby as you talk to it and it slowly gets carried away by sleep. When it comes to picking it up, you’ve got to slide one hand under its head while your other hand is under its bottom. Once you have a good hold of it, scoop up the baby as you bring it close to your chest. To avoid accidents never hold the baby while you are cooking or holding drinks.
Swaddling done right
Swaddling, this is the practice of wrapping a baby in a blanket mainly for warmth and maybe security purposes, works differently for newborns and babies. Newborns won’t stay asleep unless swaddled to the right degree. Swaddling helps newborns stabilize their temperature before their “thermostats” mature and kick in. However, swaddling should be done correctly. Ensure that the blanket is not wrapped too tightly around the baby as this can interfere with its breathing and even cause damage to its soft cartilage tissues. Also ensure that there is enough room at the bottom of the blanket so that the baby is able to comfortably bend its legs up and out. Do not wrap the blanket upto the face of the kid; they too need fresh air just like us.
When the baby is around 1 month old, swaddling should progressively stop so as to give room to the mobility of the baby especially when it’s awake. It is okay to continue swaddling the baby during naps if it seems to sleep better that way. When the bay gets to 2 months, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that swaddling be ceased, that is just before the baby starts trying to roll over. At this age, a baby won’t stay asleep unless unswaddled since the baby feels constrained in some sort of way
A baby won’t stay asleep unless held in a calming conducive environment. The environment should be free of noise and other irritating factors such as smoke. This way the baby gets to slip into some uninterrupted slumber. Newborns are more sensitive to the environment since they are just from a very peaceful environment (womb) and for this reason, a newbornwon’t stay asleep unless held in an environment that is free from the slightest distraction; may it be a soft humming of a distant machine, a blowing breeze or even extreme temperatures.
Nursing is a very critical process to a baby since it provides the only means of feeding the baby knows. The newborn or baby won’t stay asleep unless nursing is done well and to the satisfaction of the baby. While sucking, ensure that baby’s mouth covers both the nipple and the areola. Sucking on the nipple alone will leave the baby hungry and a hungry baby is a baby devoid of sleep. The feeding sessions should typically last for 20 to 30 minutes. However the baby could take longer depending on its appetite and thus you should wait for the baby to signal that it’s done with feeding by waiting for it to let go of the nipple. A newborn should have at least eight to twelve feedings in a day. The sessions are kept short but frequent mainly because the size of the stomach of a new born is approximately the size of a grown up’s fist .However on the first 3 days after birth, since the infant is not born hungry, the feeding rate will be relatively low. Also of importance is that the baby won’t stay asleep unless dirty diapers are changed as soon as possible. Dirty diapers tend to cause rashes on the baby’s bum thus causing sores during sleep which are of course very painful thus depriving the baby of sleep.
A peaceful sleep for a baby is critical in its development. With all the factors kept right, the baby should have no problem whatsoever falling into a deep comfortable sleep. However, since babies cannot communicate their feelings, close monitoring and evaluation is needed to ensure the baby is comfortable thus resulting to peaceful sleep. You need to understand the baby’s sleep patterns so that you can determine the right feeding time as well as diaper changing time. Keeping a log of the baby’s sleep will greatly help in doing this. You need to watch out for signs that show that the baby is tired and needs a rest. You also need to know the forms of baby cries, be it for hunger, tiredness or even pain. The baby won’t stay asleep unless all its issues are fully addressed.
